Onoke Spit sponsorship kicked off.
One of Palliser’s annual environmental initiatives for 2009/10 was to find a suitable local environmental project to sponsor that would help to preserve a local eco-system. After contacting DOC it was agreed that the Onoke Spit Ecological Restoration Programme was an ideal fit with Palliser.
Onoke Spit is the bar that forms Lake Onoke, where the Ruamahanga River enters Palliser Bay. Onoke falls between the Pencarrow heads to the south and Palliser Bay to the North – the two labels of Palliser Estate. The Spit mouth was opened in 1892 for flood control which lead to more land able to be farmed and ultimately vineyards being developed.
It’s 60+ hectares host a number of rare and threatened species including Black fronted Tern, Caspian Tern, Sand Tussock, Pingao/Golden Sedge, Notoreas “Wellington” Moth and Sand Daphne.
Palliser’s annual sponsorship is going to be used to help with vegetation restoration, pest control and signage.
We are very excited about our on-going association with this valuable project in restoring, protecting this beautiful part of our coast and the native animals & plants that call it home.
