When we talked to Derek he had been with Palliser for just three weeks. Three weeks is not a lot of time to discover a person’s foibles – the nearest that we could find was that he comes from the Hawkes Bay.
Derek started working in vineyards when he was 14, in the Esk Valley.
When he was working for Craggy Range he came down to Martinborough. He spent two weeks here. He brought the family with him and that’s all it took to fall in love with the place.
What he likes is that he now has family time. The vineyards he manages are no longer kilometres from home. He doesn’t have to drive for half an hour. Now it’s a short hop and he’s home for lunch. He likes that.
Outside of work and family, Derek’s love is trout fishing. He once caught a 12lb trophy fish. Which he released. Another foible – he’s a nice man.
Well it had to come! After all last season without a single frost we were definitely due for one, especially after the last few wet cold days here in Martinborough. … more
