Our 2019 vintage in a nutshell
In late October the region experienced a devastating frost. We were fortunate with minimal damage in a couple of our vineyards along the edge of the terrace. The unsettled Spring, coupled with unusually high rainfall in November and December set the vines up for growth but had an impact on flowering which resulted in lower yeilds, specifically in our Pinot Noir blocks. The New Year’s dry and moderate temperatures encouraged slow and even ripening.
Picking commenced on the 4th of March, starting with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay destined for The Griffin and The Rose. Guy McMaster, our Chief Winemaker and Viticulturist is delighted with the lovely flavours and aroma in the fruit coming in. To date we have harvested fruit for our bubbly, Pinot Noir for our Rosé, as well as some blocks of our Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Over the next one to two weeks we’ll be running at full speed aiming to have all our fruit safely tucked away in the winery well before Easter.
